In the speech/language area, expressive language skills tend to be more impaired than receptive language skills (Abbeduto et al., 2001; Abbeduto, Warren, & Conners, 2007; Silverman, 2007) with considerable dif culty with syntax (Abbeduto et al., 2003; Silverman, 2007) and speech production (J. E. Roberts, Price, & Malkin, 2007). Receptive vocabulary level for individuals with Down syndrome emerges as a relative strength, often comparable to typically developing children matched for nonverbal cognitive skills (Laws & Bishop, 2003). The disparity between expressive and receptive areas is marked and evident prior to the use of verbal language, with infant use of gestures expressively in Down syndrome delayed as well (J. F.
